Hello,
My name is Fernando Reyes, Ferny for short. I’m a Yale University student studying Religious Studies and Teacher Preparation/Education Policy. That’s how I introduce myself to people, yet something about that seems unsatisfactory. I’m an individual that loves, cares and wants to feel like I belong. I talk politics and sports, and work a large percentage of the time. I grew up in Houston, moved to Zapata, Texas and now live in New Haven. I have great friends, live a largely comfortable life, and don’t have much to complain about.
How this blog come about exactly, you may ask?
For many months, I had been grappling with something about the United States that was striking discord within me. Of course, I was proud to be an American, but something wasn’t right. It’s taken a summer and some election coverage to identify the feeling that was causing anxiety for me:
This country still had not gotten over the Civil War. This country still lives in the Nixon paradigm.
Throughout the previous election, we’ve focused on the small issues, on the issues of lipstick and houses. Yet, we’ve missed the fact that millions of Americans do not believe they are America, that millions of other Americans view half the country as traitors, and more importantly, that millions of Americans don’t believe in anything.
This blog is about them. Though we will also talk hoops, pigskin and electoral politics.
